Promise Hill is a Christian, faith-based soul care podcast offering gentle stories and guided reflection for people seeking healing, rest, and hope with God.

From Mira's journal:

I woke up with my heart pounding this morning, and for a moment I didn’t know why. Then I remembered… the photo, the text, and the questions I can’t seem to shake.

I went to see Grandma Eden today. I told her more than I expected to about my life. She listened the way she always does, like there’s no rush and no judgment.

Later, she left a basket at my door to help me heal. Is that even possible? She left her homemade tea, a soul-care workbook called "Glowing in the Dark" and a note… and something else she didn’t mention. I don’t know what it means, but it feels important.

And then the text came again calling me “Amira.”

I don’t know who they think I am… but today, instead of hiding, I answered. I have a feeling I just stepped into something I don’t fully understand yet.

1
00:00:12.373 --> 00:00:12.693
Hey there,

2
00:00:12.753 --> 00:00:13.213
friends,

3
00:00:13.334 --> 00:00:15.115
and welcome back to Promise Hill.

4
00:00:15.475 --> 00:00:16.616
This is Season 1,

5
00:00:16.776 --> 00:00:17.577
Episode 6,

6
00:00:17.837 --> 00:00:18.377
The Bruise.

7
00:00:18.878 --> 00:00:19.098
Hello,

8
00:00:19.538 --> 00:00:20.479
I'm Kimberlee Herman,

9
00:00:20.659 --> 00:00:21.180
your host.

10
00:00:21.880 --> 00:00:22.761
First things first,

11
00:00:22.901 --> 00:00:25.763
thank you for listening and walking this winding road with me.

12
00:00:26.344 --> 00:00:30.247
Whether you've been here since Episode 1 or you're just testing the waters,

13
00:00:30.387 --> 00:00:31.728
I'm so glad that you're here.

14
00:00:32.652 --> 00:00:34.973
This podcast is an unfolding story,

15
00:00:35.193 --> 00:00:37.815
so you may want to start with episode one.

16
00:00:38.915 --> 00:00:41.096
While this is a soul care podcast,

17
00:00:41.316 --> 00:00:42.857
and I'm a Christian counselor,

18
00:00:43.577 --> 00:00:47.219
just want to remind you that this does not constitute counseling.

19
00:00:47.459 --> 00:00:49.100
This is just entertainment only.

20
00:00:50.261 --> 00:00:51.361
In our last episode,

21
00:00:51.401 --> 00:00:53.062
Mira discovered the secret room,

22
00:00:53.202 --> 00:00:53.582
remember,

23
00:00:54.082 --> 00:00:56.904
and rediscovered some old memories in the box.

24
00:00:57.692 --> 00:01:02.433
She also saw an envelope with papers that her mom Ruth was not ready to discuss.

25
00:01:03.354 --> 00:01:04.234
In this episode,

26
00:01:04.254 --> 00:01:08.355
we learn that sometimes life doesn't leave scars that bleed on the outside,

27
00:01:08.875 --> 00:01:11.796
but it sure knows how to leave a bruise on your soul.

28
00:01:12.716 --> 00:01:15.617
I will meet you on the other side of the story with reflections,

29
00:01:15.777 --> 00:01:17.017
live it out action steps,

30
00:01:17.217 --> 00:01:17.777
and prayer.

31
00:01:18.318 --> 00:01:19.798
Let's listen in.

32
00:01:20.718 --> 00:01:21.959
Mira woke up in a start,

33
00:01:22.379 --> 00:01:23.179
not knowing why.

34
00:01:24.159 --> 00:01:24.799
After a moment,

35
00:01:25.119 --> 00:01:25.740
she remembered.

36
00:01:27.080 --> 00:01:27.240
Oh

37
00:01:27.440 --> 00:01:31.521
the text and my mom's box and all the memories it contained.

38
00:01:32.342 --> 00:01:33.302
And who's GL?

39
00:01:34.302 --> 00:01:36.823
Something tells me I'm not running from the past anymore.

40
00:01:37.623 --> 00:01:39.044
I'm walking straight toward it.

41
00:01:40.084 --> 00:01:41.265
I'm not sure I'm ready for this.

42
00:01:42.325 --> 00:01:44.346
I'm going to see if Grandma Eden can help me.

43
00:01:45.286 --> 00:01:50.788
The morning air hummed with a strange electricity as she made her way down the quiet street to Grandma Eden's.

44
00:01:51.828 --> 00:01:55.770
Mira's fingers brushed the worn edge of a photograph inside her purse like a talisman.

45
00:01:56.530 --> 00:01:58.231
Flowers bloomed along the sidewalk,

46
00:01:58.571 --> 00:02:01.012
perfuming the world with jasmine and lavender.

47
00:02:01.912 --> 00:02:05.274
Wind chimes sang like tiny secrets whispering her name.

48
00:02:06.194 --> 00:02:12.417
Grandma Eden opened the door before Mira could knock and greeted her with a smile and warmth that touched her soul.

49
00:02:13.397 --> 00:02:13.757
Hello,

50
00:02:13.957 --> 00:02:14.578
Mira dear.

51
00:02:15.118 --> 00:02:16.378
Were your ears burning?

52
00:02:16.739 --> 00:02:19.700
Or did your heart just know I've got the kettle on for you?

53
00:02:20.636 --> 00:02:21.757
Mira tried to smile,

54
00:02:22.177 --> 00:02:23.518
but even her voice trembled.

55
00:02:24.378 --> 00:02:25.499
I think my heart knew.

56
00:02:26.099 --> 00:02:27.560
It's been a night.

57
00:02:30.222 --> 00:02:30.762
Inside,

58
00:02:31.103 --> 00:02:34.104
the air was alive with cinnamon and orange peels.

59
00:02:34.865 --> 00:02:35.325
Penelope,

60
00:02:35.745 --> 00:02:36.346
Eden's cat,

61
00:02:36.746 --> 00:02:38.307
announced herself with a cat rub.

62
00:02:39.128 --> 00:02:40.789
I was at Mom's house last night.

63
00:02:41.629 --> 00:02:42.270
Mira began,

64
00:02:42.790 --> 00:02:46.072
fingers tracing the porcelain cup as steam curled upward.

65
00:02:46.780 --> 00:02:48.821
Eden gave a soft nod but said nothing,

66
00:02:49.321 --> 00:02:51.682
letting the silence stretch safely between them.

67
00:02:52.663 --> 00:02:55.144
Two things I'm hoping you can give me some wisdom on.

68
00:02:55.844 --> 00:03:00.946
The first thing is that I got this strange text asking if I was Amira last night.

69
00:03:01.726 --> 00:03:02.727
I haven't responded.

70
00:03:03.367 --> 00:03:04.268
That's not my name,

71
00:03:04.348 --> 00:03:05.968
but it feels like it almost should be.

72
00:03:06.789 --> 00:03:07.389
What do you think?

73
00:03:08.629 --> 00:03:10.310
Very strange indeed.

74
00:03:12.071 --> 00:03:14.352
What is holding you back from responding?

75
00:03:15.052 --> 00:03:16.532
Too many scams are going on,

76
00:03:17.653 --> 00:03:18.533
but it won't leave me.

77
00:03:19.293 --> 00:03:20.734
Then I think you know what to do.

78
00:03:21.894 --> 00:03:22.194
Okay,

79
00:03:22.434 --> 00:03:22.874
you're right.

80
00:03:23.315 --> 00:03:24.295
I need to check it out.

81
00:03:24.855 --> 00:03:25.935
I will deal with that later.

82
00:03:26.856 --> 00:03:27.096
Okay,

83
00:03:27.396 --> 00:03:28.336
now for the other thing.

84
00:03:30.017 --> 00:03:31.897
When I was going through my mom's box,

85
00:03:32.657 --> 00:03:34.878
there was this old photograph of Jackson and me.

86
00:03:35.558 --> 00:03:36.939
I haven't seen it in years,

87
00:03:37.059 --> 00:03:39.079
and I wasn't ready for what it stirred up.

88
00:03:39.779 --> 00:03:41.300
Was Jackson your husband?

89
00:03:42.060 --> 00:03:43.301
She passed the photo to Eden.

90
00:03:44.081 --> 00:03:45.241
Sunlight caught the edges,

91
00:03:45.482 --> 00:03:47.803
turning their smiles into ghosts of summer.

92
00:03:48.883 --> 00:03:49.803
He sure was.

93
00:03:50.404 --> 00:03:51.964
We were ridiculous.

94
00:03:52.785 --> 00:03:53.765
We met in middle school.

95
00:03:54.205 --> 00:03:58.627
He put his calculator in the freezer once and told everyone he gave it a brain freeze.

96
00:04:00.208 --> 00:04:03.369
I laughed so hard that chocolate milk came out of my nose,

97
00:04:03.870 --> 00:04:04.890
all over my jeans,

98
00:04:05.350 --> 00:04:07.211
and possibly onto a bystander.

99
00:04:07.911 --> 00:04:09.352
The janitor gave me tissues.

100
00:04:10.652 --> 00:04:12.113
That was the beginning of everything,

101
00:04:13.014 --> 00:04:14.275
and the end came quietly,

102
00:04:14.996 --> 00:04:17.318
more like a fading song than a fight.

103
00:04:18.098 --> 00:04:19.179
Married at 21,

104
00:04:19.620 --> 00:04:20.541
and by 28,

105
00:04:21.261 --> 00:04:21.982
it unraveled.

106
00:04:22.963 --> 00:04:24.504
It wasn't a dramatic fall.

107
00:04:25.365 --> 00:04:26.045
No affair,

108
00:04:26.626 --> 00:04:27.426
no betrayal,

109
00:04:28.447 --> 00:04:30.709
just the slow erosion of connection.

110
00:04:31.610 --> 00:04:32.991
He buried himself in work,

111
00:04:33.652 --> 00:04:35.213
I buried myself in silence.

112
00:04:35.934 --> 00:04:36.734
We never fought,

113
00:04:37.035 --> 00:04:38.576
which somehow made it worse.

114
00:04:39.496 --> 00:04:42.457
We both agreed to pretend not to notice the growing distance.

115
00:04:43.298 --> 00:04:44.178
We didn't get help.

116
00:04:45.038 --> 00:04:45.739
We should have,

117
00:04:46.239 --> 00:04:46.899
but we didn't.

118
00:04:47.819 --> 00:04:48.620
Eden reached over,

119
00:04:48.900 --> 00:04:50.621
placing a steady hand over Mira's.

120
00:04:51.641 --> 00:04:52.761
He stayed in River City,

121
00:04:53.382 --> 00:04:55.042
where we lived before I moved here.

122
00:04:56.363 --> 00:04:58.644
His family cut ties with me after the divorce.

123
00:04:59.673 --> 00:05:02.054
They were like my second home during my teen years.

124
00:05:02.975 --> 00:05:03.335
And then,

125
00:05:04.396 --> 00:05:04.776
nothing.

126
00:05:05.556 --> 00:05:07.357
Mutual friends say he's dating again.

127
00:05:08.218 --> 00:05:08.678
And I'm...

128
00:05:09.699 --> 00:05:09.979
not.

129
00:05:10.980 --> 00:05:12.020
Not ready to hear that,

130
00:05:12.120 --> 00:05:12.921
let alone date.

131
00:05:13.841 --> 00:05:15.122
Not sure I even know how.

132
00:05:16.143 --> 00:05:16.403
Ah,

133
00:05:16.843 --> 00:05:18.744
the kind of ache that doesn't bleed,

134
00:05:18.824 --> 00:05:19.945
but still bruises.

135
00:05:20.785 --> 00:05:21.966
Mira blinked hard.

136
00:05:23.247 --> 00:05:24.207
I want to move on,

137
00:05:24.367 --> 00:05:24.988
I really do.

138
00:05:26.028 --> 00:05:27.129
But I don't know how.

139
00:05:28.045 --> 00:05:29.966
Eden leaned back and sipped her orange tea,

140
00:05:30.406 --> 00:05:31.426
then set the cup down.

141
00:05:32.427 --> 00:05:32.787
I know,

142
00:05:32.907 --> 00:05:33.147
dear,

143
00:05:33.867 --> 00:05:36.509
but I also know you can't rush healing.

144
00:05:37.169 --> 00:05:40.370
That's like trying to force a flower to bloom in winter.

145
00:05:41.370 --> 00:05:43.251
But you can prepare the soil.

146
00:05:44.032 --> 00:05:45.352
That's what healing is,

147
00:05:45.632 --> 00:05:47.393
for yourself and for Jackson.

148
00:05:48.213 --> 00:05:50.374
Not forgetting the pain or regret,

149
00:05:51.194 --> 00:05:54.756
but freeing your own hands to carry hope again.

150
00:05:55.756 --> 00:05:57.257
Mira stared into her cup.

151
00:05:58.285 --> 00:06:00.306
What if I don't know what that hope looks like?

152
00:06:01.047 --> 00:06:02.107
One day when you're ready,

153
00:06:02.708 --> 00:06:03.948
I'll tell you my story.

154
00:06:05.269 --> 00:06:06.190
I had no hope,

155
00:06:06.710 --> 00:06:08.291
only darkness in my life.

156
00:06:09.071 --> 00:06:10.432
But hope found me.

157
00:06:11.793 --> 00:06:14.214
But let's get you to start dreaming again.

158
00:06:15.135 --> 00:06:16.736
Eden's eyes began to twinkle.

159
00:06:17.716 --> 00:06:18.817
Not about a person,

160
00:06:19.377 --> 00:06:20.358
but about a life.

161
00:06:21.178 --> 00:06:21.738
Your life.

162
00:06:22.539 --> 00:06:26.221
What makes your soul stretch wide and breathe deep?

163
00:06:27.065 --> 00:06:29.846
What stirs you when the world is quiet?

164
00:06:30.667 --> 00:06:35.248
Mira's eyes distracted her to the big black book she saw on Eden's table.

165
00:06:36.269 --> 00:06:38.010
She was still not ready to ask about it,

166
00:06:38.430 --> 00:06:39.890
but she could feel it tugging at her.

167
00:06:41.131 --> 00:06:41.631
I don't know,

168
00:06:42.591 --> 00:06:44.972
but I do know I'm scared of letting go of Jackson.

169
00:06:45.913 --> 00:06:48.074
What if I never find something like that again?

170
00:06:48.934 --> 00:06:50.075
Eden smiled softly.

171
00:06:51.055 --> 00:06:51.855
You might not,

172
00:06:52.636 --> 00:06:55.637
but what if what you find next is something even better?

173
00:06:56.141 --> 00:06:57.202
Not because it's bigger,

174
00:06:57.922 --> 00:07:01.284
but because you'll be walking into it more whole.

175
00:07:02.125 --> 00:07:07.108
Penelope made her presence again with a soft purr and side rub against Mira's leg.

176
00:07:08.649 --> 00:07:09.109
You see,

177
00:07:09.209 --> 00:07:09.489
dear,

178
00:07:10.170 --> 00:07:11.931
wholeness is just for you,

179
00:07:12.371 --> 00:07:14.112
without worrying about Jackson.

180
00:07:15.053 --> 00:07:18.735
It's about bringing your focus back to the parts of you that need healing,

181
00:07:19.355 --> 00:07:22.237
even way before Jackson came into the picture.

182
00:07:23.085 --> 00:07:28.787
It's also about becoming aware of your behavior and thoughts so those can change if needed.

183
00:07:29.867 --> 00:07:31.267
It sounds like with Jackson,

184
00:07:31.587 --> 00:07:32.768
you were a suppressor.

185
00:07:33.708 --> 00:07:37.509
You've already started working on that by sharing your feelings with me.

186
00:07:38.429 --> 00:07:40.710
Mira felt something settled deep inside her.

187
00:07:41.290 --> 00:07:42.730
She didn't have all the answers,

188
00:07:43.311 --> 00:07:44.991
but maybe answers weren't the goal.

189
00:07:45.931 --> 00:07:46.231
Eden,

190
00:07:46.972 --> 00:07:49.192
how do I even begin getting whole?

191
00:07:50.052 --> 00:07:51.353
Grandma Eden smiled.

192
00:07:52.093 --> 00:07:52.373
Mira,

193
00:07:52.473 --> 00:07:52.713
dear,

194
00:07:53.194 --> 00:07:55.575
I will drop off something later to help guide you.

195
00:07:56.135 --> 00:07:56.855
Take a read.

196
00:07:57.515 --> 00:07:58.676
It's a lot to go over,

197
00:07:58.776 --> 00:08:00.597
so I want you to have a head start.

198
00:08:01.397 --> 00:08:01.697
Okay,

199
00:08:01.937 --> 00:08:02.297
thank you,

200
00:08:02.337 --> 00:08:02.958
Grandma Eden.

201
00:08:03.578 --> 00:08:06.099
I really appreciate you and your kindness to me.

202
00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:07.800
She finished her tea,

203
00:08:08.200 --> 00:08:09.261
hugged Eden tightly,

204
00:08:09.701 --> 00:08:10.781
and headed toward the door.

205
00:08:11.822 --> 00:08:11.942
Oh,

206
00:08:12.302 --> 00:08:13.262
one last question,

207
00:08:13.342 --> 00:08:13.582
dear.

208
00:08:14.443 --> 00:08:16.183
Do you attend church somewhere?

209
00:08:17.084 --> 00:08:17.204
No,

210
00:08:17.704 --> 00:08:19.385
not sure I'm interested in that right now.

211
00:08:20.445 --> 00:08:22.146
Do you think church could actually help me?

212
00:08:22.986 --> 00:08:23.666
I know it would.

213
00:08:24.946 --> 00:08:25.707
When you are ready,

214
00:08:25.827 --> 00:08:26.087
dear,

215
00:08:26.647 --> 00:08:28.468
we can talk more about church.

216
00:08:29.668 --> 00:08:30.648
Enjoy your day,

217
00:08:30.768 --> 00:08:31.048
love.

218
00:08:31.909 --> 00:08:32.829
Later that afternoon,

219
00:08:33.249 --> 00:08:35.690
when Mira went to retrieve her mail from the postbox,

220
00:08:36.210 --> 00:08:38.331
she noticed a basket sitting by her door.

221
00:08:39.311 --> 00:08:41.952
Eden had quietly stopped by with a note that read,

222
00:08:42.712 --> 00:08:43.052
Mira,

223
00:08:43.132 --> 00:08:43.632
my dear,

224
00:08:44.092 --> 00:08:45.613
here's a little something for you.

225
00:08:46.545 --> 00:08:47.386
There was an envelope,

226
00:08:47.706 --> 00:08:50.747
a bag of chamomile and jasmine tea she made from her garden,

227
00:08:51.168 --> 00:08:52.088
and a mug that said,

228
00:08:52.448 --> 00:08:53.449
Breakthrough's coming,

229
00:08:53.849 --> 00:08:54.710
mind your curls.

230
00:08:55.770 --> 00:08:59.052
Mira chuckled as she read that and touched her dark brown waves.

231
00:08:59.593 --> 00:09:01.233
The perfect mug from Eden.

232
00:09:02.114 --> 00:09:06.617
Mira made her tea in her mind your curls mug and settled in to read Eden's letter.

233
00:09:07.537 --> 00:09:10.919
Mira hoped this was salve for the bruise she carried for Jackson.

234
00:09:11.760 --> 00:09:14.081
She was hopeful now that she had steps to follow.

235
00:09:14.845 --> 00:09:16.106
But as she opened the envelope,

236
00:09:16.486 --> 00:09:17.466
something slipped out.

237
00:09:18.186 --> 00:09:19.587
Something Eden hadn't mentioned.

238
00:09:20.187 --> 00:09:24.069
A pressed wildflower bookmark attached with twine to a word,

239
00:09:24.749 --> 00:09:25.229
Salak.

240
00:09:27.630 --> 00:09:28.871
Mira held her breath.

241
00:09:29.691 --> 00:09:29.911
Hmm,

242
00:09:30.932 --> 00:09:31.812
what does this mean?

243
00:09:32.532 --> 00:09:32.952
Just then,

244
00:09:33.292 --> 00:09:33.793
a text.

245
00:09:34.593 --> 00:09:35.753
Mira read it out loud.

246
00:09:36.554 --> 00:09:36.934
Amira,

247
00:09:37.614 --> 00:09:40.515
I really need to talk to you and to tell you everything.

248
00:09:41.516 --> 00:09:42.196
Tell me what?

249
00:09:42.656 --> 00:09:44.217
Now I'm freaking out a little here.

250
00:09:44.697 --> 00:09:46.459
I'm really hoping this is a wrong number,

251
00:09:47.180 --> 00:09:49.223
but I will take Grandma Eden's advice.

252
00:09:49.864 --> 00:09:50.284
Normally,

253
00:09:50.404 --> 00:09:52.126
I would just pretend this didn't exist,

254
00:09:52.467 --> 00:09:55.170
but today I'm going to respond rather than hide.

255
00:09:55.951 --> 00:09:56.892
She started typing.

256
00:09:58.354 --> 00:10:00.597
Who is this and what do you need to tell me?

257
00:10:01.475 --> 00:10:03.196
Mira had stepped into something today.

258
00:10:03.736 --> 00:10:05.497
Not just the pages of an old story,

259
00:10:05.937 --> 00:10:10.119
but the beginnings of her own healing with Jackson with another mystery unfolding.

260
00:10:10.919 --> 00:10:13.700
The bruise she carried for so long won't heal overnight,

261
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:16.281
but maybe it could begin to fade,

262
00:10:16.801 --> 00:10:17.962
one step at a time.

263
00:10:18.742 --> 00:10:19.422
And sometimes,

264
00:10:19.743 --> 00:10:20.803
when we think we're alone,

265
00:10:21.203 --> 00:10:23.204
something unexpected comes to guide us.

266
00:10:23.744 --> 00:10:24.204
A letter.

267
00:10:24.745 --> 00:10:25.345
A flower.

268
00:10:25.905 --> 00:10:27.666
A mug with a new kind of hope.

269
00:10:28.566 --> 00:10:29.086
Take it away,

270
00:10:29.267 --> 00:10:29.607
Kimberlee

271
00:10:30.655 --> 00:10:32.356
Let's walk this chapter home.

272
00:10:33.316 --> 00:10:37.337
I love how Mira is addressing the wounds that are revealing their tenderness.

273
00:10:38.037 --> 00:10:41.018
She is asking for help and realizes it's time.

274
00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:46.280
Do you find yourself feeling stuck and bruised in an area of your life?

275
00:10:47.280 --> 00:10:50.721
I bet many of us have bruises we have been ignoring for years.

276
00:10:51.421 --> 00:10:55.603
Maybe now is the time to start bringing the salve and tenderly care for them.

277
00:10:56.547 --> 00:11:00.888
Perhaps the reflections and action steps today will be the ointment needed to get started.

278
00:11:02.008 --> 00:11:05.769
Something we can take away from Eden is how she listened to Mira.

279
00:11:06.470 --> 00:11:07.790
She allowed her to speak,

280
00:11:08.530 --> 00:11:09.290
didn't rush her,

281
00:11:09.410 --> 00:11:10.231
didn't interrupt her,

282
00:11:10.311 --> 00:11:11.711
and didn't try to fix her.

283
00:11:12.491 --> 00:11:18.353
This is a great reminder when we have friends who just need to verbally process something they're thinking about.

284
00:11:18.973 --> 00:11:21.374
It's not our job to try to jump in and fix it.

285
00:11:22.494 --> 00:11:25.815
It's our job to create a safe space for them to feel listened to

286
00:11:26.395 --> 00:11:28.217
and comfortable sharing where they are.

287
00:11:29.518 --> 00:11:33.861
I wanted to share that I have written a breakup recovery guide.

288
00:11:34.342 --> 00:11:37.985
You can find it on my website at promisehillpodcast.com.

289
00:11:38.505 --> 00:11:43.449
It's a nine-step guide written in mine and Grandma Eden's voice.

290
00:11:43.929 --> 00:11:45.831
It's ADHD friendly as well,

291
00:11:46.291 --> 00:11:51.115
as far as it offering short lessons that hopefully you find interesting.

292
00:11:52.256 --> 00:11:55.439
This is for the woman who just...

293
00:11:55.863 --> 00:11:58.804
got out of a relationship and is feeling really,

294
00:11:58.924 --> 00:12:01.665
really down and depressed because of it.

295
00:12:02.185 --> 00:12:11.967
Or for the woman who is starting to notice a pattern with the men that she dates that the breakup recovery part is just very difficult.

296
00:12:13.628 --> 00:12:13.888
All right,

297
00:12:13.928 --> 00:12:19.029
let's walk over to the Promise Hill water fountain and have a seat to discuss three reflections from this story.

298
00:12:19.749 --> 00:12:20.890
Reflection number one,

299
00:12:21.350 --> 00:12:22.870
healing doesn't mean forgetting.

300
00:12:22.950 --> 00:12:25.391
It means making peace with what happened.

301
00:12:26.103 --> 00:12:31.487
Healing is a process of coming to terms with our past without being chained to it.

302
00:12:31.908 --> 00:12:33.209
It's not erasing the hurt,

303
00:12:33.409 --> 00:12:36.852
but learning to live with it in a way that no longer controls us.

304
00:12:37.833 --> 00:12:38.653
Hear it and hold it.

305
00:12:39.174 --> 00:12:42.416
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

306
00:12:42.597 --> 00:12:45.559
Psalm 147 verse 3.

307
00:12:45.560 --> 00:12:48.602
Learning to live with pain is not our goal.

308
00:12:49.242 --> 00:12:51.004
We will have memories of hard times,

309
00:12:51.044 --> 00:12:54.987
but our goal is to remove the emotion from the event.

310
00:12:55.655 --> 00:12:58.016
Now there are different ways to accomplish this.

311
00:12:58.816 --> 00:13:01.277
One of the healing tools I use is called inner healing.

312
00:13:01.657 --> 00:13:04.618
It's when we go into prayer and submit the pain to Jesus.

313
00:13:04.998 --> 00:13:08.819
He then takes the pain and exchanges peace for it.

314
00:13:09.319 --> 00:13:11.399
It can get a little bit more complicated than that,

315
00:13:11.439 --> 00:13:12.560
but that's the gist of it.

316
00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:15.281
There are many other ways to heal as well.

317
00:13:16.141 --> 00:13:17.561
A lot of secular tools.

318
00:13:17.961 --> 00:13:19.922
I'm just thankful that we can start with Jesus.

319
00:13:21.262 --> 00:13:22.363
Reflection number two,

320
00:13:22.743 --> 00:13:23.743
grief and hope.

321
00:13:24.247 --> 00:13:25.648
can sit at the same table.

322
00:13:26.268 --> 00:13:28.009
One doesn't cancel out the other.

323
00:13:29.250 --> 00:13:34.773
It is possible to grieve what was lost while still holding on to the hope for what is to come.

324
00:13:35.474 --> 00:13:40.196
The presence of pain doesn't mean we've lost the ability to hope.

325
00:13:41.357 --> 00:13:44.039
But we must remember to keep our hope in Jesus.

326
00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:45.620
Hear it and hold it.

327
00:13:46.280 --> 00:13:47.701
Weeping may start for the night,

328
00:13:47.761 --> 00:13:49.542
but rejoicing comes in the morning.

329
00:13:49.682 --> 00:13:51.023
Psalm 30 verse 5.

330
00:13:51.595 --> 00:13:54.396
Grieving is a process and takes time to walk through.

331
00:13:54.997 --> 00:13:57.618
I'm sure most of you know about the five stages of grief.

332
00:13:58.198 --> 00:14:00.799
While this was originally for the person who was dying,

333
00:14:01.199 --> 00:14:03.600
it made sense for these stages to be universal.

334
00:14:04.461 --> 00:14:07.522
These stages are not linear but can ebb and flow.

335
00:14:08.302 --> 00:14:09.663
They are denial,

336
00:14:09.883 --> 00:14:10.163
anger,

337
00:14:10.263 --> 00:14:10.703
bargaining,

338
00:14:10.743 --> 00:14:11.284
depression,

339
00:14:11.484 --> 00:14:12.484
and acceptance.

340
00:14:13.004 --> 00:14:13.985
While walking through it,

341
00:14:14.245 --> 00:14:18.847
you can still have hope that a better day is coming and that hope starts with you.

342
00:14:19.619 --> 00:14:23.040
Keeping your hope in Jesus that he will carry you through the pain.

343
00:14:24.421 --> 00:14:25.541
Reflection number three,

344
00:14:25.902 --> 00:14:27.162
God never wastes pain.

345
00:14:27.322 --> 00:14:29.023
He repurposes it for growth.

346
00:14:30.023 --> 00:14:31.444
Our pain isn't meaningless.

347
00:14:31.884 --> 00:14:33.385
God uses it to shape us,

348
00:14:33.465 --> 00:14:34.005
refine us,

349
00:14:34.105 --> 00:14:35.165
and deepen our faith.

350
00:14:35.806 --> 00:14:39.947
What we once thought was wasted hurt is now a tool for our transformation.

351
00:14:40.788 --> 00:14:41.668
Hear it and hold it.

352
00:14:42.148 --> 00:14:43.589
Consider it pure joy,

353
00:14:43.709 --> 00:14:45.030
my brothers and sisters,

354
00:14:45.350 --> 00:14:48.411
whenever you face trials of many kinds because

355
00:14:48.831 --> 00:14:52.294
you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

356
00:14:52.694 --> 00:14:57.178
Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete,

357
00:14:57.338 --> 00:14:58.820
not lacking anything.

358
00:14:59.440 --> 00:15:01.562
James 1 verses 2 through 4.

359
00:15:02.503 --> 00:15:05.826
While this verse is telling us that no matter what our trials,

360
00:15:06.166 --> 00:15:07.787
we are to have faith in God.

361
00:15:08.348 --> 00:15:13.012
This will grow us as we press into faith and not have doubts about God's help.

362
00:15:15.274 --> 00:15:16.795
Let's sit and breathe here.

363
00:15:17.507 --> 00:15:20.406
A few slow breaths to take in what we just learned.

364
00:15:22.092 --> 00:15:25.193
Healing is making peace with what happened.

365
00:15:26.334 --> 00:15:29.555
Grief and hope can sit at the same table,

366
00:15:30.876 --> 00:15:33.137
and God repurposes pain for growth.

367
00:15:34.637 --> 00:15:36.358
Let that settle in for a moment.

368
00:15:42.601 --> 00:15:42.861
Now,

369
00:15:43.221 --> 00:15:46.522
let's take a walk down Main Street for our action steps.

370
00:15:47.023 --> 00:15:47.563
Number one,

371
00:15:48.363 --> 00:15:50.144
create a new morning ritual.

372
00:15:50.960 --> 00:15:54.923
where you speak truth over yourself instead of replaying old memories.

373
00:15:55.664 --> 00:15:56.385
Try it tomorrow.

374
00:15:57.205 --> 00:15:59.707
An example is using scripture to step into,

375
00:15:59.968 --> 00:16:00.568
such as,

376
00:16:01.249 --> 00:16:03.430
I am beautifully and wonderfully made.

377
00:16:04.631 --> 00:16:11.157
And this becomes even more powerful when you can look in the mirror into your eyes and say this over yourself.

378
00:16:12.638 --> 00:16:13.159
Number two,

379
00:16:14.079 --> 00:16:17.983
write a letter to the version of you who loved and lost that love.

380
00:16:18.363 --> 00:16:19.504
If you're in a breakup.

381
00:16:20.260 --> 00:16:21.381
Thank her for surviving.

382
00:16:21.541 --> 00:16:25.564
This is especially great for a person who went through a divorce or a challenging breakup.

383
00:16:26.144 --> 00:16:29.727
This one brings so much compassion to parts of yourself that walk through heartache.

384
00:16:30.247 --> 00:16:37.852
This is about showing love to those parts of you that are hurting rather than criticizing them and living in the what-ifs or I should-haves.

385
00:16:38.273 --> 00:16:39.354
Stay away from those.

386
00:16:41.395 --> 00:16:42.516
In my work as a counselor,

387
00:16:42.596 --> 00:16:44.397
I work with fractured soul parts.

388
00:16:44.737 --> 00:16:48.300
The secular world calls this type of work internal family systems.

389
00:16:48.716 --> 00:16:52.277
And there's a Christian ministry called Heart Sync that also works with parts.

390
00:16:52.837 --> 00:16:56.798
God showed me this way of how he wants me to work with soul parts.

391
00:16:57.298 --> 00:17:00.099
And that will unfold over time as we get to know each other.

392
00:17:00.539 --> 00:17:04.360
But I wanted to give clarification to what parts were in my world.

393
00:17:06.521 --> 00:17:06.761
All right,

394
00:17:07.541 --> 00:17:08.982
our last action step.

395
00:17:09.702 --> 00:17:12.903
Make a playlist of songs that reflect healing,

396
00:17:13.063 --> 00:17:13.523
rising,

397
00:17:13.603 --> 00:17:14.463
and new beginnings.

398
00:17:15.904 --> 00:17:17.624
Call it your moving up soundtrack.

399
00:17:18.296 --> 00:17:21.159
I have some songs on my playlist that I just love.

400
00:17:21.519 --> 00:17:23.340
They're encouraging and supportive.

401
00:17:25.723 --> 00:17:26.063
All right,

402
00:17:26.263 --> 00:17:27.524
it's time for prayer.

403
00:17:28.885 --> 00:17:29.546
Father God,

404
00:17:29.886 --> 00:17:32.528
for the ones listening who carry quiet bruises,

405
00:17:32.949 --> 00:17:34.290
memories that sting,

406
00:17:34.470 --> 00:17:35.651
names that still ache,

407
00:17:35.711 --> 00:17:37.232
and love that feels half-written,

408
00:17:37.673 --> 00:17:39.154
I lift them up to you now.

409
00:17:39.895 --> 00:17:41.356
You see the unseen grief,

410
00:17:41.396 --> 00:17:43.558
the stories that never felt like they ended,

411
00:17:43.898 --> 00:17:45.800
and the hearts afraid to begin again.

412
00:17:46.308 --> 00:17:49.229
You know what was lost and what still longs to be found.

413
00:17:50.089 --> 00:17:50.369
Lord,

414
00:17:50.409 --> 00:17:53.630
for every listener holding an old photograph in their soul,

415
00:17:54.190 --> 00:17:56.671
for every memory that's both sacred and sore,

416
00:17:56.831 --> 00:17:58.011
I ask for peace.

417
00:17:58.571 --> 00:18:00.892
Not the kind that pretends everything is fine,

418
00:18:00.912 --> 00:18:03.173
but the peace that settles deep and quiet,

419
00:18:03.553 --> 00:18:04.733
knowing you are near.

420
00:18:05.813 --> 00:18:07.174
Give us courage to forgive,

421
00:18:07.474 --> 00:18:08.334
not just others,

422
00:18:08.394 --> 00:18:09.474
but for ourselves.

423
00:18:10.075 --> 00:18:10.715
Give us hope,

424
00:18:10.835 --> 00:18:11.875
not in what was,

425
00:18:12.435 --> 00:18:14.996
but in what could be because of who you are.

426
00:18:15.704 --> 00:18:16.384
And remind us,

427
00:18:16.444 --> 00:18:16.665
God,

428
00:18:16.685 --> 00:18:18.386
that no matter what chapter we're in,

429
00:18:18.606 --> 00:18:20.527
it's not the end of the story.

430
00:18:21.047 --> 00:18:22.368
We are still being written,

431
00:18:22.548 --> 00:18:22.948
and you,

432
00:18:23.208 --> 00:18:24.669
gentle author of our lives,

433
00:18:24.989 --> 00:18:27.611
know exactly how to unfold what's next.

434
00:18:28.091 --> 00:18:28.691
In Jesus'

435
00:18:28.851 --> 00:18:29.532
holy name,

436
00:18:30.012 --> 00:18:30.392
amen.

437
00:18:32.273 --> 00:18:32.573
Thank you,

438
00:18:32.613 --> 00:18:32.893
friends,

439
00:18:32.913 --> 00:18:33.534
for listening.

440
00:18:33.694 --> 00:18:36.756
I do hope you find encouragement in this podcast.

441
00:18:37.196 --> 00:18:37.796
As always,

442
00:18:37.816 --> 00:18:41.138
if you're struggling or dealing with severe emotions or trauma,

443
00:18:41.618 --> 00:18:44.640
please find a trained professional to walk beside you.

444
00:18:46.208 --> 00:18:46.970
Until next time,

445
00:18:47.011 --> 00:18:47.372
friends,

446
00:18:47.692 --> 00:18:50.721
may you find peace in the presence and hope on the hilltop.

447
00:18:51.202 --> 00:18:54.652
This is Kimberlee Herman cheering you on from Promise Hill.
